the 90s

My 100 favourite songs of the 90's. Since this list has a lot fewer singles than the 60's and 70's list I've dispensed with the Billboard chart position business.

1. Nirvana
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

" 'My girl, My giiiirrrrl' Matt has excellent taste. This is a great #1 pick. It's weird; I often, and for no reason, find myself wondering what the world would be like today if Kurt Cobain were still in it?"--Gerlinda Grimes, Weaklazyliar

"Not to disagree with the love of my life (Gerlinda), but, while Kurt was talented, the post mortem mythologizing of him is undeserved. "In Utero" was not much different from "Nevermind" and chances are, had Nirvana even stayed together much longer, they would have faded from the limelight just as Pearl Jam has. The world would be pretty much the same, except maybe there might be fewer mediocre bands trying to sound like Pearl Jam. But that's just my opinion."--Paul Melancon

2. DNA featuring Suzanne Vega
Toms Diner

"This song is high on the list of my personal "guilty pleasure" awards, a list that includes, amongst others, "Its A Mistake" by Men At Work and anything off the first two Tears For Fears records.)"--Rob Crow, Optiganally Yours

Sheena-Na-Gig

"I possess many regrets and disappointments about the barren void of despair that is my life (I am living out my remaining years under official protest), chief among them is the fact that I have yet to experience a profound and lasting relationship with a woman (specifically, one who likes me back)--and while my expectations sink in that regard, I do, in a taciturn way, have a profound and lasting relationship with the work of female artists--real ones like Joan Armatrading or Joni Mitchell, not the pink People Magazine confections of someone like Jewel. What are we talking about? Oh yes, PJ Harvey, I truly feel that the deep pleasure I take in her music, specifically the stuff from "Dry" and this song, which is so honest and passionate, makes up a little bit for the absense of a real-life feminine influence in my life. The child-bearing hips, the ruby lips, I just can't imagine what the problem is with the guy she sings the song to--what is he thinking? I crave the pillows, for the love of God."--Robi Lyle, Atlanta, GA

"I sometimes comfort myself with the thought that, if John Lydon weren't so busy whoring himself out these days to whoever will pay and pretending it's some sort of post-modern statement against capitalism, he'd kick Billy Jo's ass into the ground, in a way that I would really enjoy."--Paul Melancon

"Since when did punk become synonomous with 'rich jock kid with short dyed hair driving a giant truck around that his mom bought him'?"--Rob Crow

"The first time I heard this song was on the cassette I'd bought of "Blind", and as it turned out the tape had a glitch so that when Harriet sings "treat you unkind" near the end, it sounds like she's hiccupping, so something like "treat you un-HIC-kind". Now when I hear the song, without the hiccup, it sounds wrong. The same goes for "Lay It Down" by RATT. If I don't hear the hiccups during "if you give me just one chance, to prove myself in love", it all sounds off."--Charles Christiansen, Boston, MA
