My Bad Idea
Well, this all starts way back last August when I had absolutely nothing to do all day. I wasn't going back to school as far as I knew, and I just found out I had a weird heart condition, and I was kind of gloomy and felt like I ought to do something with myself. Like so many times before, I got through my mopeyness by sitting in my room, alone, listening to my CDs. Anyway, one day it dawned on me that maybe I could actually be productive about the whole thing, so I decided I was going to write a big essay (book, actually, was my original thought) about the music I liked and what I liked about it and why, and what it might all actually mean.
I also had this idea that to go along with the essay/book, I'd come up with a website where I could write about my favourite songs and have other people write in, too. Well, this idea morphed into a set of Top 100 lists. I've always been into lists, ever since I was six and used to memorize the MTV Top 20 and the American Top 40. So I made Top 100 lists, of my favourite songs of the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Then what I decided to do is write to cool people (musicians and the like) and have THEM write about the songs on the list. That way (I thought) it would be more interesting, plus I thought maybe it would draw more people in to talk about what THEY liked.
Anyway, the idea seemed to go over really well. Some of my favourite bands wrote to me and were like 'Sure, great idea!' Of course, then none of them actually did it.
I understand, of course, that these are people who are busy touring and everything, and every few months I'd give up entirely, but then I'd always get one mroe answer of 'Sure, great idea!' and so I'd keep going. Anyway, not many people have done it, and I think I'm giving up on asking people to, although I really appreciate the help of everybody that really did. And if you want to say something I'd love to hear from you, whoever you are, because I still think it's a good idea. It's just now I've gone back to school, and I don't have all the time I did (plus my own band has been taking up quite a bit of time, and you know how things are....) So feel free to look at the lists, and do what you will with them.
Matt
(PS--Amy Rigby, mod housewife, and Julie Chadwick from Helicopter Helicopter didn't say anything about any of the songs, but they wrote the nicest "Sorry, I don't have time for this" letters. So that was nice too.
